The New York Times

The review is of Delphine de Vigan’s novel “Based on a True Story”. It’s a psychological thriller about a writer who befriends another writer, their friendship later on takes a strange turn. It gets obsessive and stalker-like, and as the story gets darker, their identities begin to blur. Read the review here.

The New York Times, US Census

I had the privilege of illustrating this piece for The New York Times' Opinion section. The article is about how the Supreme Court let the administration manipulate the 2020 census by adding a citizenship question to it. "Roughly 6.5 million people, would go uncounted with a citizenship question on the 2020 census." Adding the citizenship question to the form would discourage both legal and non legal citizens to fill up the form. This would defeat the purpose of the census to count everyone in the nation.

The Washington Post. Space Rovers

I was interviewed and commissioned by The Washington Post magazine to create art for a subject I was currently interested in.

This piece is called “The Doctor and the Rabbit”. I was obsessed with NASA’s space rover InSight at the time. View the piece here.

Need something to keep your mind off the political upheaval? Artist Lydia Ortiz has an idea: space rovers. Not only do the Americans have InSight probing the surface of Mars like a planetary doctor, but now China has a rover, Yutu-2 (or Jade Rabbit-2), on the far side of the moon, a first in space exploration. “I like thinking and reading up on space exploration, most times to escape other things in the news,” Ortiz says. “It also often gives me perspective on how small I am.”

Old Navy Poster

I was commissioned by Old Navy to design and illustrate their Heritage Poster for my hometown in Manila. I knew I had to draw a jeepney! So I dedicated this piece to the kids I rode with; Xave, Marc, Kiti, Xanne, Czarina, Deldon, Kuya Sammy, and our driver, Mang Rudy.

Collaborated on this project with my illustrator and photographer husband Patrick Rafanan.
